Astoria Market RECAP

This is my first time exhibiting at a craft market instead of a comic convention and I had a blast. It's at a Astoria beer garden so naturally every vendors and customers had a glass or a pitcher of two of beer in hands, enjoying the beautiful summer night with a soft acoustic live guitar music.

Being a craft market, there were mostly jewelries, home and bake goods, I was one of a few art vendors, but it was great to see so many different things in one place. I'm only sorry that I didn't get to shop around much since I had to hold my own fort.

Thanks everyone who came out! I'm definitely up for doing another one of these events this season and will post about the info soon.

Dr. Sketchy's Figure Drawing

I've heard about Dr. Sketchy's for many years but have never attended one until now. It's a bit of speak easy-ish event which they don't tell you where it'll be held until the day before the event. This time it was near my studio so I decided to check it out.

The venue was a seemingly abandoned old warehouse building. It was quite spacious but had no AC with a temperature over 90's outside, which was no good especially for the model who was wearing head to toe latex blow up doll costume. She was sweating so much that it sipped through her costume, I was worried that she might faint but luckily the tragedy of that sort didn't happen.

Deltron 3030: Collector's Card Deck for Dan The Automator, San Diego Comic Con

Dan Nakamura, a.k.a. Dan The Automater is one of the most influential music producers of today. He has produced Gorillaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Lovage, pizzicato five, Cibo Matto and Pillowfight among many others. He is having a panel at the upcoming San Diego Comic Con and a group of comic artist got together to make a collector's card deck depicting each stage of Dan's career and the musicians he's helped to create. I got the section about Del the Funkee Homosapien and his epic dystopian hip hop space opera album, Deltron 3030 and about DJ, Kid Koala (who is in the background on the top left). I normally don't listen to hip hop or turn-table genre and I got to discover a lot of great new music by doing this project which was awesome.

The panel will be held at July 19th Saturday at 7 pm. The lucky attendees will take home the hot-off-the-press color card deck with awesome illustrations including mine above, so if you are gonna be at SDCC, check out the panel!

Quilt Girl: Comic on Fabric

I've made "Quilt Girl", a comic strip that is designed to be printed on fabric a few months ago, and I finally got to see it printed on fabric last week. The design studio got so excited by this project that they've even printed a life size version of the heroine. "Quilt Girl" is a new super hero that I've made for the quilt making, crafty audience. The comic strip is repeated on the fabric to be read in continuous order. The fabric will be sold in fabric shops nationwide and also will be available as tote bags for quilting supplies.

I love it when the model uses interesting props! She used to be a west african dancer.

Powder Her Face

I watched Power Her Face at BAM a few weeks ago, thanks to my good friend Ellen Lindner and her friend Monique who got us the tickets to its premier.

I've never watched a modern opera before, but I've heard that this opera is based on a real life sex scandal of Duchess of Argyll in the early 60's.  Her husband, the 11th Duke of argyll presented evidences of her affairs with 88 men. Now that's an interesting story for an opera.

The music is composed by Thomas Ades. It was kinda hard to get into in the beginning with all the singers singling falsetto to non exsistant melody and odd percussions. But later I realized it fits into the crazy and absurd nature of the story so perfectly and began to appreciate it. And the set and costume designs were just gorgeous. The live videos of actions in the hidden rooms were projected onto some of the walls on the set, pushing the aspect of voyeurism. And the scene with 22 naked men on the stage was something that I'd never expected to see in an Opera.

After watching this amazing show, I was intrigued to find out more about the real Duchess of Argyll aka the "Dirty Duchess." There were many articles and photos of her online. She was definitely a gorgeous woman but her face showed so much disdain and boredom in every photo which was very well depicted in the opera. Here are couple of my drawings of the Dirty Duchess.
