Sneak Peek: "Why Oh, Why Alabama" (work in progress)

I've been thinking about doing a graphic memoir about my move from Seoul, Korea to Huntsville Alabama in 1995 for about a year. And I've finally finished writing the draft last month. It was a trip down the memory lane for sure, looking though old letters, dairies, school documents and journals. Some of them made me laugh, some of them made me cry. So much happened during that one year. It wasn't easy to make a cohesive story out of all the jumble of information and memories. But now I have a good map to make this project come to life.

This is my first time making a graphic novel, and the task seems monumental, especially because I want it to be hand colored and lettered. But I'm very excited to have a story that I can be passionate about and to explore different ways to use the language of comics to convey my story effectively. One of the main focus of my memoir is about isolation and confusion caused by the language barrier.  It'll be an interesting challenge to draw and I'm already full of ideas how to express it in the way only comic can. Fingers crossed I'll be able to make it happen the way I imagined them on the pages.
